First Impressions - Benefit 'They're Real' Push Up Liner.

Tuesday, 8 July 2014
You've probably saw lots of posts on this product recently, and so have I, but I'm yet to find one that I totally agree with. And that might be because I haven't quite made my mind up on this eye liner yet. I wanted to get my first impressions out there, for those of you that may be thinking about buying it amongst all the hype. So before we start, I'll explain my eye liner troubles.

I've tried liquid, gel and felt tip liners and find that the latter works best for me. The stiff felt tip helps with my shaky hands and I find I can get the best shape. I also like that they tend to be easy to wipe off and start again if I make a mistake (which happens regularly). This brings me to the next issue - staying power. Felt tips don't tend to last and the colour isn't as bold as I'd like. I know that gel liners are supposed to perform the best in terms of colour and staying power, so I had extremely high hopes for this stiff-tipped gel liner pen when it was launched - on paper, it's everything I'm looking for. Now this is a long review, so brace yourself. I've lots to say..

'They're Real' push-up liner uses a pen-type application but with a gel liner. The tip of the liner is rubber with a slanted edge, and you click the bottom of the pen which produces a small amount of gel at the top. You have to wipe a small amount of the product onto your hand on first application, otherwise it would be too heavy. This is quite annoying, because it feels like you're wasting some of the product. The product's advertised as being 'criminally easy' to apply, but in all honestly, I didn't find it any easier than others. I actually found the formula to be the biggest problem. It dried really, really quickly so any mistake was basically irreversible. The formula is waterproof, and Benefit offer the 'They're Real' remover as the solution to remove it at the end of the day. This really is an 'end of the day' product and not a quick-fix eraser. The white cream turns black as it's mixed with the liner and it can get pretty damn messy. I'd say I've made a mess 4 mornings out of 10, and had to totally re-do my eye area - which is quite frustrating to say the least. BUT, when I did get the shape right, I was impressed. The colour was really black and as I'd found out the hard way before, it didn't budge all day. I suppose you can't win sometimes, if it's long-lasting, you're not going to be able to wipe it off when you make a mistake. Maybe there isn't a perfect eye liner ... ?

I know this sounds like it's a negative review so far, but now I want to show you how I've learned how to use this. As I said, the thing I struggle with, is the shape. So I started using my normal, somewhat faded felt-tip liner to draw the shape first. This means I can wipe it off and start again if I make a mess and know that the rest of my face is still in tact. Once I've got my outline, I bring out the Benefit eye liner. Then I simply go over my lines with the gel pen and voilà, super-black long-lasting flicks - finally! Here's an example with a super-subtle look...

*(admittedly still not perfect..)

Now I've got into the swing of using this, I do like the effect it creates. Mostly the super black colour. Whether or not I think it's worthwhile using two liners is yet to be decided. Maybe this is the only solution to get the best of both worlds? I think eye liner is such an individual thing, and we all prefer different things depending on our own liner abilities.

So this is a bit of a weird review because I don't really have a final conclusion to it. I would say that it's probably not going to solve your eye liner problems if you struggle with shape like me. If you're good at it already but just need the right formula, then you've already ticked the box that I'm missing and this may be a wonder product for you!

I'm interested in all the different opinions on this, so please let me know what you think if you've tried it? Also, do you have any eye liner tips? What's your favourite eye liner?

  2. Thanks for such an in-depth and honest review.

I'm really keen to try this liner, both as a big fan of Benefit and somebody who has never been able to use liquid liners due to her shaky hands - but this has cemented my desire to try it out in a shop first before splashing out!

  3. I'm a fan of felt tip and gel liners, so I do really want to try this. I've seen some disappointed reviews, and some rave reviews, but I'll just be trying it out for myself. It looks really pretty on you, I love the shape you've done.

  7. Great review - interesting to hear what you thought about it. I'm on the fence. It just seems waaaaay too difficult to apply. And I know everyone raves about the They're Real mascara, but I don't rate it. I love other Benefit stuff, but this just seems overly complicated. What if the gel runs out halfway through and you have to squeeze more out, that just seems annoying and un-neccessary. Have you tried Soap and Glory Supercat liner? Its a felt tip one but its really dark and long-lasting. I'll be sticking with that I think!

  9. This is soooo helpful! Could have been an expensive lesson if I hadn't read this. I love your honesty, more bloggers should give constructive criticism on products that are a bit tricky without fear that their post looks negative or they're giving a bad review. I think it looks gorgeous when you've got the hang of it in your pictures!

  10. I really want to try this but I might be in the same boat as you I love how much more black and long lasting gel liner is but I also have to draw it on first with a felt tip liner and then go over with the gel liner ha! Xx

  12. I'm really interested in this but I don't want to dive right in and potentially waste money. I don't wear eyeliner very often - mostly cause I find it so fiddly but this could maybe be the product I've been looking for? hmmm... x
