70s Trends 2015

Well hello! So it's not like me to post on a Friday night but it's been the busiest week ever, so I'm spending tonight catching up on everything - and of course, eating pizza and watching last nights eastenders to see what all the fuss is about. (p.s BOBBY?! ) A cosy night in isn't complete without some on line shopping too, so here's what I've been adding to my imaginary basket on the New Look website. With the house move approaching, I've been on a severe spending ban this month and subsequently, I now feel like I need all the things

New Look have some lovely things at the moment at really affordable prices, which is just what I need. Some basics like the grey and rust jumpers are first on my list for the post-ban celebration shop. I love this rust colour and everything 70's - arghhh, not shopping is killing me! I also have my eye on this duster coat for heading into spring, I need to go into the shop to check the colour though - it says 'lilac' but to me this looks grey? I've been saying it for ages but I'm definitely doing a wardrobe clear out on depop/ebay this weekend, so maybe I'll raise some funds for a mini-spree. If you see any of these items in an outfit post next week, it was a success!

What trends are you loving at the moment?

Glasses Direct London Retro
Glasses Direct London Retro
London Retro 'Piccadilly' c/o Glasses Direct *

Well hello! So here's me just casually hanging out in a pair of sunglasses .. indoors, as typically it rained on the day I planned to take pictures. I could be a successful weather girl if I based my report around days that I plan to take pictures - guaranteed rain, every time! Anyway, a few weeks ago the team at Glasses Direct got in touch and asked me to review a pair of sunglasses from the new London Retro Collection. I hadn't heard of the site before but I'd swooned over London Retro a lot, and was super excited to try a pair. I went for the Piccadilly frames in black, which are a classic shape with a bit of a 60's vibe. I feel like they have an ever-so-slight cat eye shape to them too, which I love. These are one of those styles that I think would suit everyone!

These are available as standard prescription glasses too, and they even offer a free home trial where you can try out 4 pairs of your choice for 7 days. I remember glasses shopping a few years ago, and I ended up giving up and picking a pair out of sheer frustration because I was so sick of trying on glasses. Needless to say, I wore them once! Lesson learned - take your time, it's important, they're going to be on your face.

Glasses Direct London Retro

They come in this gorgeous embossed brown leather case and call me crazy, but this makes them feel so special. Presentation earns a lot of extra points in my books! It's a lovely case and really sturdy too, so I know they're safe in my big, overfilled bag. The glasses are lightweight but you can feel that they're good quality and well made.

Glasses Direct London Retro

There's lots of other designer sunglasses and prescription glasses available on the website - let me know which ones are your favourites? You'll probably be seeing a lot of these in future outfit posts - so I hope you like them!

Which sunglasses shape do you usually go for? Do you have a favourite pair?

Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Hello and Happy Pancake Day .. well, almost! Shall we say .. pancake day eve? I've been obsessed with making protein pancakes recently, so thought I'd share this super easy recipe today so you can try it out in the morning if you like. Since I did my Nosh Detox a week ago, I've been making sure that every meal I have is nutritious, healthy and most importantly, really tasty. These pancakes definitely fit the criteria. They consist of 4 simple ingredients and take just 10 minutes to make. So here's what you'll need and how to do it ...

Healthy Breakfast Ideas
What You'll Need (makes 2 large pancakes)
Very Ripe banana
1 Full Egg + 1 Egg White
1/2 Scoop Chocolate Protein Powder (I use this one)
1/2 tsp Cinnamon

Chocolate and Banana Protein Pancakes

1. Mash the banana in a bowl thoroughly until it's almost liquid.
2. Add the eggs and mix with a fork until totally combined.
3. Add the protein powder and mix again until you have a pancake mix consistency.
4. Sprinkle in 1 tsp cinnamon (add more, less or none depending on your own preference) and mix again.

Healthy Breakfast Ideas

5. Heat a small frying pan and spray with Fry Light (or add a little olive oil)
6. Empty in the pancake mixture. I make two big pancakes from this, but you can obviously make smaller ones if you prefer. Try not to make them too thick, so they're easier to flip.
7. Cook on a low-medium heat for a 1-2 minutes. It's ready to flip when you're able to use the spatula to easily separate the pancake from the pan. Flip over and cook on the other side for a minute or two and .. voilĂ !

Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Now for the toppers! My favourite is lots of blueberries and strawberries, with a bit of honey or maple syrup over the top - although I try and keep that for the weekend! You could also top with lemon juice and icing sugar, or nutella if you want to mix it up a bit. The cooked banana and cinnamon are such a gorgeous combination that you can eat them on their own, and they do a good job of keeping you full until lunch time too.

Healthy Breakfast Ideas

I'm looking forward to trying out lots of different variations of pancakes. I spotted chocolate peanut butter flavour protein, which has sent my brain into overdrive - that sounds like it would be amazing! I really hope you enjoy making these if you give them a go, send me a pic on twitter or tag me in your instagram pics if you do! :)

Are any of you making pancakes tomorrow?

Rose Gold, Hearts and Pearls.

Argento earrings

Rose gold, hearts and pearls are such a dreamy combo! You might remember these earrings from this outfit post last week - I've been wearing them to death since I got them and thought they deserved their own little post on here too. Argento were kind enough to send these over with some other goodies for Valentines day. If you don't know already, Argento is a lovely little jewellery shop that stocks some gorgeous and unique jewellery. I went there for my Olivia Burton watch last year and found it hard to leave - they have so many pretty things in there!

And since they're extra kind this Valentines, Argento are offering all of you a 20% discount using the code 'LOVE20'- so if you've been looking for an excuse to splash out on yourself, here it is! And if that's not enough, they're even throwing in a free selfie stick when you spend over £50. All the signs you've been waiting for!

So I hope you're all having a fun friday and have some good plans for this weekend. Mine involve clearing out my wardrobe and boxes of make-up and beauty products in the hope that it'll make the whole moving process a bit easier. Expect to see some new things on my depop (maisymeow) over the next few days! Oh, and I hope you've enjoyed all the valentines gift ideas this week and have a happy Valentines whatever you end up doing :)

Have you got any plans for Valentines day?

Valentines White Chocolate Crispy Cakes

Homemade Valentines Gift Ideas
Homemade Valentines gift ideas

It's all about Valentines this week and today I thought I'd share an idea for those of you who don't want to spend a lot, but still want to give a little thoughtful gift. These white chocolate crispy cakes are super quick and easy to make, look so pretty and cost hardly anything to make. Plus, the best part is, once you've given them as a gift, you'll probably get to share them. You can take your tin back too, if you're shameless enough - I was.

What you'll need
400g Milky Bar Chocolate
Rice Krispies
Mini marshmallows ( here)
Mixed heart cake decorations (here)
Edible Glitter (£0.99 from Home Bargains)
Pink Tissue Paper
Cake Tin (£1.99 from Home Bargains)

Homemade Valentines Gift Ideas

White Chocolate Crispy Valentines Cakes

1. Break 300g of the chocolate into small pieces, put into a large bowl and melt in the microwave. Do not to heat for any longer than 10 seconds at a time without stirring in between.
2. Once it's melted, slowly pour in Rice Krispies while mixing. How much you use depends on how many you want to make and how chocolatey you want them to be, so it's really up to you. You'll be surprised at how far the chocolate goes - don't be afraid to add more Rice Krispies. I added enough to make about twice as many as shown above which was about 120g
3. Add a handful of mini marshmallows and mix again.
4. Spread the mixture out flat into a shallow baking tray or bowl. This doesn't need cooked, so any bowl will do.
5. Melt the remaining 100g in the microwave - again, stirring every 10 seconds.
6. Pour the melted chocolate over the top of the mixture to create an even-ish surface.
7. Sprinkle the hearts over the melted chocolate and then the edible glitter.
8. Wait for 30-45 mins while the chocolate hardens or speed things up by putting it in the fridge.
9. Once hardened, cut into sections. I went for small squares, but you could make them bigger or even use a cute little heart cutter like this one to cut yours out.
10. Place your tissue paper into the cake tin and arrange them on top - and voilĂ

Valentines day Jewellery ideas
Beaverbrooks Valentines Gifts
Bi Metal Infinity Necklace*

You'll probably notice there's a theme to my posts this week - I've got lots of Valentines gift ideas from big to small but if you don't have a valentine this year, don't miss out - just treat yourself. Beaverbrooks have launched their #TreatYourself campaign and picked lots of lovely Valentines themed gifts for under £50 here

I've been trying to build a collection of good jewellery recently - I suppose the constant repurchasing of cheap jewellery has started to wear a bit thin. I fell in love with this bi-metal infinity necklace* straight away - two tone jewellery is really in at the moment and I love rose gold and silver together. The chain on this necklace is quite short, so it sits really nicely against the skin and goes with any neckline of top of you're wearing.

Beaverbrooks Valentines Gifts

A few other favourites from the campaign are these pearl stud earrings and this rose gold plated heart necklace. Both would be perfect every day pieces - I've got my eye on this watch too although it needs a bit more saving up for, and judging by my saving skills recently, I'd probably be better off putting it on my Christmas list.

You can see all the Valentines picks for under £50 here

Which one would you pick for Valentines day?

Nosh Super Green Vegetable Cleanse Review

Sunday, 8 February 2015
Recently, I was forced to accept that it was almost February and my 'New Years' healthy lifestyle still hadn't started. I was still skipping meals in favour of 'low fat' snacks, eating far too much refined sugar and then wondering why my skin was breaking out like crazy. I wasn't getting any nutrients, so I was lacking in energy and then craving sugary foods for an energy boost - it was a cycle that I had to break before any new diet plan was going to work. Back in 2013, I blogged about the Nosh 3 Day Juice Fast. Having nothing but healthy juices for 3 days had been hard but it really helped to kick start my diet. After looking on line and re-reading my old review, I decided to go for it again. I knew it was going to be hard, but hoped this would be the game-changer.

Nosh Detox Review

Nosh give a personal customer service - you fill in a form on line, then they phone you to discuss what results you're looking for and what program would work best for you. I was looking for something to kick start a new healthy lifestyle, and to beat my junk food cravings and was recommended the Nosh Super Green Vegetable Cleanse*. I booked in a delivery date for the following week and the parcel arrived on Tuesday evening. Inside were 12 green juices, 4 lemon & ginger tonic waters and a timetable telling me when to drink each juice.

8.30 am : Lemon & Ginger Tonic
11.30 am : No. 1 'The Rehydrator' (spinach, avocado, mango, apple)
1.30 pm : No. 2 'The Eliminator'(kale, celery, banana, mandarin)
4.30 pm : No. 3 'The Healer' (broccoli, parsley, avocado, peach)
8.30 pm: No. 4 'The Rejuvenator' (courgette, pineapple, mint)

Nosh Detox Review

I was working early all week so I'd have my first drink at my desk on schedule at 8.30am. This tasted like lemon and ginger water - was I too optimistic to think it would be like fizzy ginger beer? Probably. I was pleasantly surprised when I first tried 'The Rehydrator' - spinach, avocado, mango and apple actually tasted quite good.

I was never hungry before it was time to have my second juice at 1.30pm. The timetable works really well, and you only feel real hunger, until an hour, at most, before you're due another.  What I did notice, was that at certain times of the day I'd have really strong cravings. This made me really stop and think - do I normally distinguish between genuine hunger and cravings? Or do I just think food, eat food? I also started to recognise the difference between hunger and thirst. Nosh encourage you to drink a lot of water during detox. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger, and can lead to us craving foods that have a lot of moisture in them. I noticed that a big pint of water really energised me in the afternoons and that I need to start doing that more often.

Nosh Detox Review

The only time I struggled to drink the juices was at 4.30pm each day when it was time for No. 3 'The Healer'. I absolutely detest broccoli, and that's all I could taste in this juice. Luckily, it was cold from the fridge so I could gulp it down quickly with the taste only hitting me at the end. Honestly though, it tasted horrendous.

My toughest time was on the evening of day two. I'd had a dull headache throughout the day which I put down to sugar or caffeine withdrawals. I was genuinely debating whether to quit, especially when it got to broccoli o'clock. I kept thinking 'do I really need to do this?' but deep down I knew I didn't want to quit. I was staring at the bottle, debating whether to drink it or give up,  when I spotted this written on the front:

'Change is inevitable; suffering optional. So the quicker you embrace any concept, good or bad, the faster you can release it and move on'

I wanted to do this otherwise I wouldn't have started. I knew if I gave up, I'd blame any diet failure on the fact I hadn't completed my detox properly. I'd started now, and it was difficult, but I couldn't give up. It's just 3 days out of my whole life, after all. Mind over matter. And I was already beginning to learn a lot about the way I eat.

Nosh Detox Review

The excitement of it ending kept me going through day 3, until I started feeling unwell about 9pm. My bones were aching, I had a temperature and knew I'd caught the virus that was going around my family. Three hours short of the finish line, I had to eat something to prepare my stomach for lots of cold and flu tablets. I had one of Andy's protein pancakes, washed it down with cough medicine and paracetamol and went to bed.

So now onto the big question .. did it work?

My main goal of the detox was to reset my relationship with food, kick my bad habits and kick start a new healthy lifestyle. The detox made me learn some valuable lessons and for that reason alone, it was worth it.

1. Recognising real hunger: I snack so often that I rarely feel proper hunger. I felt real hunger at times and it was then that I found myself craving a proper meal like chicken, vegetables etc. Feeling real hunger made me recognise when it with purely psychological cravings or even thirst. I also realised that real hunger is good, and makes me want a proper meal instead of continuously snacking on empty calories like Snack-a-jacks.

2. Appreciating food: This follows on from number one. Food tastes much better when you're actually hungry, as opposed to constantly snacking for the sake of it. I want to have proper meals every day and I want to make them good. Why have a tasteless low-calorie soup followed by cardboard flavour low-calorie snacks in the afternoon, when I can have a big, healthy lunch that keeps me full until dinner?

3. Will Power: I'd convinced myself recently that I just don't have will power. If I wanted sweets, I'd have sweets. This detox has taught me that I do have will power and it took a lot of it to get me through this. I'll remember this if I ever feel like I need to have something bad - I don't need to do anything, it's always a choice.

4. Sleep: I was in bed for 10.30pm every night of the detox. I'd wake up feeling bright and alert the next day when usually, I  struggle to get up, fight with my alarm clock then find myself eating for an energy boost mid-morning. At night time, I snack on sugary things that keep me awake until midnight and the nasty cycle continues. I say it a lot - but a good sleep solves so many problems and my 10.30 bed time is here to stay.

Nosh Detox Review

My overall aim was much bigger than short-term weight loss, but during my detox I lost 4.5 pounds within 3 days. I expect to put 1 or 2 back in the next week as I start to have food in my stomach again, but it's a good thing all the same. My stomach feels flatter  and my skin has even started to clear up too. Despite still battling a virus this weekend, I've continued to eat healthily and have actually been craving vegetables. My body finally remembers how good they make me feel - which was exactly what I was aiming for.

Would I recommend it?

Let's face it, these programmes are expensive. For my first detox, I got a deal through Groupon and paid £69. For this one, I was lucky enough to get it free of charge since I was reviewing it on here (this was after I approached Nosh - I was going to do it anyway). Would I pay full price at £240 for three days? Probably not. But the good thing is, you don't need to. Nosh regularly have offers through Groupon, Wowcher, etc where you can get the 3 or 5 day program for £69-£99. I'd definitely pay again if it was through one of these deals.

Of course you can make your own at home, and this is something I'm going to try too, but personally, having a set program, timetable and pre-made juices really helped me to push through it. If you're thinking of trying a detox, I'd recommend a set program like this for your first time and then trying out your own afterwards.

So that's the longest post I've ever written but I really hope you find it helpful if you're thinking of detoxing too. There's a lot of negativity around detoxes and there's no denying that some are total fads - detox teas, I'm looking at you! But if you have any questions at all - let me know in the comments and I'll answer them asap!

Would you ever do a juice detox program?

p.s only 5 days left to enter my Marc Jacobs perfume giveaway!

* This isn't a sponsored post, but Nosh kindly provided this juice program without charge, for the purpose of reviewing it on my blog.  All thoughts are my own, as always!

Stripe Shirt with White Collar: ASOS | Coat: Primark (similar) | Super Skinny Jeans: New Look
Shoes: River Island | Bracelet: Wells & Co | Rose Gold Heart Earrings c/o Argento

I'm currently going through one of those 'I've got nothing to wear' phases and since we're saving like crazy just now, shopping is off limits. I feel like I'm over all my Winter clothes and dark winter colours are so unappealing right now - you can tell it's getting to the end of the season! Are any of you feeling like this? I'm so excited for Spring now. I saw this striped shirt on ASOS and thought it would be a nice little inexpensive update to brighten up my wardrobe. I love a contrast collar and I sized up in this shirt too, so its a nice oversized look on it's own too. It has structured white cuffs, which means it has a really nice shape to it - I'd have taken my coat off to show you completely if it hadn't been like -1000 degrees yesterday. See the ice rink path behind me as evidence.

How cute are these earrings from Argento? I have a Valentines gift guide post coming up this week which include these, but I just couldn't help wearing them yesterday! I almost completely stopped wearing jewellery over the last few months but I'm starting to build up a good collection again. The rose gold bracelet is one I got for Christmas this year and I love that I have these earrings to match it with now. Anyway - ramble, ramble, ramble! Hope you've had a good weekend and enjoyed the snow if you had it - I've loved these bright, snowy days!

Do you like this shirt? How would you style it?

Beating the Sunday Night Fear.

Sunday, 1 February 2015
Sunday mornings are my favourite time of the week. I love the Sunday atmosphere - calm, relaxed and no pressure to do anything. But as the day goes on, that all too familiar 'Sunday Night Fear' sets in. Whether you're working the next day or not, everyone can relate to that feeling that the weekend is over and the next one is as far away as possible. *Sigh*. If you follow me on instagram, you might have spotted this sleep hamper during the week. I was sent this as part of the #BeatTheFear campaign by Time4Sleep. They're sharing lots of tips and advice on their website for beating the Sunday night fear - check out their page here to find out more!

Beat The Fear
Dream Analysing Book

My favourite thing in the hamper was this book - The Dream Dictionary from A-Z by Theresa Cheung. I have some crazy dreams at times, so I'm looking forward to analysing them in the morning with this. The cover is so pretty too and would look lovely sitting out on a bedside table.

Sleep Easy Pillow Mist

The hamper also included one of my current favourite things just now - pillow spray. I've been using my This Works Pillow Spray religiously since I got it for Christmas. This one is 'Sleep Easy Pillow Mist' which smells similar, except with a hint of citrus to it. I was super excited to see the Deep Sleep Stress Less roller in there too. The scent is Eucalyptus and Frankincense which, to me, smells like lavender and tea tree. This is applied to the pulse points to refresh your sinuses and help you relax. I'm a total sucker for things like this so my routine before bed time is starting to get quite complex - pillow spray, pulse points, microwavable lavender wrap! I love making some herbal tea before bed too, although this Dr Stuart's Valerian Plus tea wasn't to my taste. Last but not least, was this Sleep Mask from Anatomicals which made me laugh - 'Nod Off and Let the World Sod Off'.

I posted some sleep tips a few weeks ago too - check that out here if you missed it!

What's your tips for beating the Sunday Night fear?
